Shocked and Devastated: DGP Ramachandra Rao Reacts to Stepdaughter Ranya Rao’s Arrest

Introduction

In a shocking turn of events, renowned actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) for alleged gold smuggling upon her arrival from Dubai. The incident has gained significant attention, particularly due to her connection with Director General of Police (DGP) Ramachandra Rao of the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. Reacting to the arrest, DGP Rao expressed his shock and devastation, distancing himself from the allegations.

The Arrest and Investigation

Acting on a tip-off, officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted Ranya Rao upon her arrival on an Emirates flight from Dubai on March 3, 2025. The authorities suspected her involvement in gold smuggling and promptly took her into custody for further interrogation.

During questioning, Ranya claimed her visit to Dubai was for business purposes. However, the DRI alleges she was carrying 14.8 kilograms of gold intended to be illegally brought into India. Following her arrest, she was produced before a special court for financial offenses and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody until March 18, 2025.

DGP Ramachandra Rao’s Statement

Reacting to the news, DGP Ramachandra Rao stated that he was unaware of his stepdaughter’s alleged involvement in smuggling activities. Speaking to ANI, he said:

"I was also shocked and devastated when such an incident came to my notice through the media. Like any other father, I was deeply affected. She is not living with us; she is staying separately with her husband. There must be some issue between them."

He further emphasized that the law will take its course and that there is no black mark on his career, asserting that he had no prior knowledge of the allegations against her.

Legal and Political Reactions

The Karnataka government has maintained a strict stance on the issue. Congress MLA and Legal Advisor to the Chief Minister, AS Ponnanna, clarified that no one would receive special treatment, regardless of their connections:

"She has been accused of smuggling, and the law will take its course – whether she is the daughter of the DGP, the Chief Minister, or the Prime Minister. If any official nexus is involved, the investigation will reveal it."

His statement highlights the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that the law applies equally to all.

Court Proceedings and Judicial Custody

On March 4, 2025, Ranya Rao was produced before a special court for financial offenses. Before being transferred to judicial custody, she was subjected to a mandatory medical examination at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru.

The court remanded her to judicial custody until March 18, 2025, pending further investigation. Officials continue to probe the case, analyzing the circumstances surrounding the alleged smuggling attempt.

Conclusion

Ranya Rao’s arrest for gold smuggling has sent shockwaves through the public and the law enforcement community. While the DRI investigation continues, the case underscores the stringent enforcement of anti-smuggling laws in India. Meanwhile, DGP Ramachandra Rao has distanced himself from the controversy, asserting his commitment to upholding the law.

As the legal process unfolds, this high-profile case is expected to set a precedent for how authorities handle similar incidents in the future.
