Belgium Monitoring Mehul Choksi Case Amid Global Legal Scrutiny

Belgium Acknowledges Importance of Mehul Choksi Case

The Belgian government has officially confirmed that it is closely following the legal developments surrounding Mehul Choksi, a fugitive businessman wanted in India for the ₹14,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. According to David Jordens, Spokesperson for Belgium’s Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, the case is being treated with significant attention. However, he emphasized that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the FPS Justice Department, limiting the scope of comments from foreign affairs officials.

Choksi’s Possible Presence in Belgium

Speculation about Choksi's possible presence in Belgium has raised concerns, given that he was last reported to have left Antigua & Barbuda for medical treatment. While Jordens refrained from disclosing his whereabouts, he assured that Belgian authorities are actively monitoring the situation and remain engaged with any significant updates.

Antigua & Barbuda’s Statement on Choksi’s Status

Meanwhile, E.P. Chet Greene, Foreign Minister of Antigua & Barbuda, confirmed that Choksi is no longer on the island but remains a citizen of Antigua & Barbuda. Speaking to ANI, Greene reassured that both India and Antigua are collaborating on the matter, emphasizing a commitment to the rule of law and democratic traditions.

India’s Pursuit of Justice in the PNB Scam

Mehul Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, is accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of ₹14,000 crore, making it one of India's biggest financial frauds. The Indian government has been actively pursuing their extradition, ensuring adherence to international legal frameworks and cooperation with foreign jurisdictions.

Ongoing Global Legal Implications

The case has significant international legal implications, with Choksi seeking refuge in multiple countries and challenging extradition attempts. While Belgium acknowledges the importance of the case, it remains to be seen whether legal proceedings in Antigua, Belgium, or other jurisdictions will lead to his eventual return to India.

Will Choksi Finally Face Justice?

As legal proceedings unfold, the global attention on this case continues to grow. With Belgium, Antigua, and India working together, the question remains: Will Choksi finally be extradited and held accountable for one of India’s biggest banking frauds?
