US Tariffs, India’s Oil Imports and the Putin-Trump Alaska Summit: A New Geopolitical Flashpoint

Trump: “Russia Lost an Oil Client, Which is India”

US President Donald Trump has escalated his criticism of India’s oil trade with Russia, linking it directly to his administration’s tariff and sanctions policy. In an interview with Fox News aboard Air Force One, Trump remarked that Russia had “lost an oil client, which is India,” highlighting New Delhi’s reduction of crude oil purchases from Moscow.

He stated that India accounted for around 40% of Russia’s oil trade, but warned that the imposition of secondary sanctions could be “devastating” for Moscow. “If I have to do it, I’ll do it, maybe I won’t have to do it,” Trump said, suggesting that harsher economic penalties remain an option.

US Tariffs on Indian Imports

Trump’s remarks come on the heels of a sharp increase in tariffs on Indian imports. On August 7, the US imposed an additional 25% tariff, effectively raising the total duty to 50% on Indian goods. The White House justified this action on grounds of national security and foreign policy, arguing that India’s imports of Russian oil posed an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States.

The Executive Order clarified that the duty applies to all Indian imports into the US, except for those already in transit or exempted under specific provisions. This move follows Trump’s repeated assertions that India’s energy trade with Russia undermines Washington’s broader sanctions regime.

India’s Response: “Unfair and Unjustified”

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly rejected the US move, describing the additional tariffs as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”

In a statement, the MEA stressed that India’s crude oil imports are dictated by market factors and aimed at ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion citizens. It criticized Washington for singling out India when “several other countries are also purchasing Russian oil.”

The ministry reiterated that New Delhi would take “all actions necessary” to protect its national interests.

Putin Endorses Trump, Criticizes Biden on Ukraine

In a parallel development, Russian President Vladimir Putin used his joint press conference with Trump in Alaska to voice support for the US leader. Putin claimed that if Trump had been in power in 2022, the Russia-Ukraine conflict “would not have happened.”

According to Putin, he had warned then-President Joe Biden against pushing tensions to a “point of no return” but was ignored. Echoing Trump’s own campaign rhetoric, Putin said: “When President Trump says had he been President back then, there would have been no war, I am quite sure it would indeed be so.”

Symbolism of the Alaska Summit

The Putin-Trump meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, carried heavy symbolism. Putin emphasized the historical ties between Russia and the US in Alaska, referencing World War II cooperation through the “airbridge” that supplied Soviet forces with American aircraft and equipment.

Calling the meeting “constructive,” Putin described the US and Russia as “close neighbours” separated only by a narrow strait. He also highlighted the region’s shared cultural and historical heritage, citing Russian-origin place names and Orthodox churches in Alaska.

Russia-US Relations at a Low Point

Both leaders acknowledged that US-Russia relations had reached their lowest point since the Cold War. Putin described the state of affairs as “not benefiting our countries and the world,” but expressed optimism that dialogue under Trump could pave the way for cooperation.

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has reportedly made several trips to Russia in recent months to lay the groundwork for this summit. Putin confirmed that their negotiations focused significantly on Ukraine.

Global Implications

The Trump-Putin summit signals two critical shifts in global geopolitics:

  1. India as a Flashpoint – Trump’s tariffs and sanctions highlight India’s growing centrality in the global oil trade and its delicate balancing act between Washington and Moscow.

  2. Trump-Putin Alignment – Putin’s endorsement of Trump on Ukraine underscores Russia’s strategic interest in a Trump presidency, particularly in contrast to Biden’s hardline policies.

Conclusion

Trump’s assertion that “Russia lost India as an oil client” and his imposition of steep tariffs mark a significant escalation in US-India trade tensions. Meanwhile, Putin’s alignment with Trump over Ukraine reveals a convergence of narratives that could reshape diplomatic alignments if Trump continues on this path.

The Alaska summit has not only reopened dialogue between Washington and Moscow but also placed India’s energy policies at the centre of global power struggles.
