Tragedy on Tracks: Four Dead in Mumbra Train Mishap, Maharashtra



Incident Overview: Local Train Mishap in Thane District

In a tragic turn of events on Monday, four passengers lost their lives and several others were injured after falling from an excessively crowded local train at Mumbra railway station, located in Thane district, Maharashtra. The incident occurred on the Down/Fast Line, severely disrupting local train services.

According to officials from Central Railway, 13 people were initially injured, out of which four succumbed to their injuries, and four others are still undergoing medical treatment.

Cause of the Accident: Overcrowding and Footboard Travel

The accident reportedly occurred when passengers travelling on the footboard of a train coming from Kasara collided with passengers on another train heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The excessive crowding led to the passengers losing their balance and falling off the train near Mumbra station.

Central Railway has attributed the accident to overcrowding during peak hours, emphasizing the risks of footboard travel, which remains a critical safety concern in Mumbai’s suburban railway system.

Railway Response and Safety Measures Announced

Central Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, confirmed the fatalities and stated that the injured are being given necessary medical attention. In response to the mishap, the Railway Board has initiated safety reforms:

  • Retrofitting of all existing rakes to enhance safety.

  • Introduction of AC rakes with automatic door closure systems in new trains.

  • Public appeals urging commuters to avoid travelling on footboards.

These measures are aimed at reducing accidents due to overcrowding and improving passenger safety on Mumbai's lifeline—its local trains.

Government and Political Reaction: Calls for Accountability

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his grief over the incident and confirmed that he had spoken to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding urgent preventive actions.

“I have spoken to our Railway Minister. Work is being done to ensure such accidents do not happen again. The Railways is taking this incident very seriously,” said Eknath Shinde.

He also assured that the government is providing all necessary medical facilities and financial support to the injured.

Local MP Visits Hospitalized Victims

Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde visited the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where the injured passengers are being treated. He offered condolences to the families of the deceased and directed hospital authorities to ensure prompt medical care.

In a post on social media platform X, he wrote:

"It is very unfortunate that some citizens died after falling from a local train between Diva-Mumbra railway station this morning. We share the grief of their families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Service Disruption and Ongoing Investigation

The incident led to temporary suspension of train services on the affected lines, causing inconvenience to thousands of daily commuters. Authorities, including the railway police and administrative officers, arrived promptly at the scene, and an investigation is currently underway to determine specific operational lapses.
