BJP Sets Up Inquiry Committee to Probe Kolkata Law College Gang-Rape Case

BJP President JP Nadda Constitutes Four-Member Probe Panel

In response to the shocking gang-rape of a female law student inside the South Calcutta Law College, BJP national president JP Nadda has constituted a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident. The committee includes:

  • Satpal Singh, former Union Minister

  • Meenakshi Lekhi, former Union Minister

  • Biplab Kumar Deb, Member of Parliament and former Tripura CM

  • Manan Kumar Mishra, Member of Parliament

The team has been tasked with visiting the crime scene, interacting with authorities and stakeholders, and submitting a report directly to BJP chief JP Nadda.

In a statement, the BJP condemned the incident and raised serious concerns about the law and order situation in West Bengal, calling the crime "heinous and reprehensible."

Details of the Incident: Assault Inside Law College Premises

The incident reportedly took place inside the South Calcutta Law College, located in Kolkata’s Kasba area, where a female student was allegedly gang-raped by a group of individuals associated with the institution.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, and Kolkata Police launched immediate action by arresting three accused within 24 hours:

  • Monojit Mishra (31)

  • Zaib Ahmed (19)

  • Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)

All three were either former students or staff of the law college.

Subsequently, the police arrested Pinaki Banerjee (55), a security guard at the college. The arrested individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are being produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a request for police custody.

NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance, Demands Time-Bound Probe

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the case and issued a strong response. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, demanding a time-bound and thorough investigation under applicable provisions of the BNS.

The NCW also raised concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions and emphasized the urgency of justice in such cases.

Political Fallout: BJP Demands Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation

The gang-rape incident has triggered a political confrontation between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP in West Bengal.

BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh has held Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally responsible for the "rising atrocities against women" and demanded her immediate resignation.

“This incident reflects the mindset of the TMC leadership and their failure to ensure women's safety in Bengal,” Ghosh stated.

He accused the West Bengal government of encouraging a culture of lawlessness and claimed that criminals operate with impunity under the current regime.

Ghosh also alleged that the incident was "pre-planned" and not merely related to any personal relationship or proposal, as was being speculated in some circles.

Ongoing Investigation & Public Outrage

The case continues to garner national attention, sparking widespread outrage and demands for swift justice. The public has expressed concern over:

  • The safety of women on educational campuses

  • The accountability of institutional authorities

  • The slow deterioration of public safety in parts of West Bengal

Legal and civil society organisations have called for institutional reforms, better CCTV and security protocols in colleges, and enhanced oversight of private guards and administrative staff.

Conclusion: Test of Accountability and Governance

This incident is more than just a criminal case—it is a litmus test for political accountability, institutional safety protocols, and justice delivery mechanisms in India. As the BJP inquiry panel prepares its findings, and as NCW pushes for faster prosecution, all eyes are now on the West Bengal government’s response, the judicial system, and whether the victim will receive timely and fair justice.

The broader question remains: How safe are our students inside our educational institutions? And what structural steps will now be taken to ensure such horror is not repeated?
