Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case: Chilling 790-Page Chargesheet Exposes Conspiracy

Chargesheet Filed in Sohra Court

The Meghalaya Police has filed a 790-page chargesheet in the sensational murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was brutally killed during his honeymoon trip to Sohra in May 2025. The chargesheet, submitted before the Sohra court, names five principal accused and lays bare a conspiracy that investigators have described as “cold-blooded and meticulously planned.”

The accused include:

  • Sonam Raghuvanshi (wife of the victim)

  • Raj Kushwaha (alleged lover of Sonam)

  • Three hired assailants – Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi

All have been charged under Sections 103(1), 238(a), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

How the Murder Was Planned

According to the SIT, Sonam Raghuvanshi (Accused No. 1) continued her relationship with Raj Kushwaha even after marrying Raja on May 11, 2025, in Indore. Within days of the wedding, the duo allegedly conspired to eliminate Raja under the guise of a honeymoon trip.

  • May 20: Raja and Sonam travelled to Shillong and later to Sohra.

  • Three failed attempts were made to execute the murder before the final act.

  • May 23: Hired assailants attacked Raja with machetes near Wei Sawdong Falls, with Sonam allegedly present at the scene.

  • Raja’s body was thrown into a gorge at Arliang Riat Kunongrim, Sohra.

His mutilated body was recovered on June 2, nearly 10 days after the murder.

Case Timeline: Key Dates

  • May 11: Raja marries Sonam in Indore.

  • May 20: Couple arrives in Shillong, then Sohra.

  • May 23: Murder allegedly carried out near Wei Sawdong Falls.

  • May 26: Couple reported missing.

  • May 31: Abandoned scooter traced near Golden Pines Dhaba.

  • June 2: Body recovered from gorge.

  • June 8–11: Sonam, Kushwaha, and three assailants arrested in UP & MP.

  • June 22–25: Three more accused arrested for evidence destruction.

Additional Accused for Evidence Tampering

Three others – property dealer Silome James, flat owner Lokendra Tomar, and security guard Balbir Ahirwar – were also arrested for allegedly destroying evidence. All three have since secured bail, with Tomar and Ahirwar granted bail on July 12.

Victim’s Family Demands Death Penalty

Raja’s brother Vipin Raghuvanshi welcomed the chargesheet but demanded the death penalty for all accused.

“Sonam and all others accused should face severe punishment. I demand that Sonam, Raj Kushwaha, and all the others get a death sentence,” Vipin said.

He also alleged betrayal by Sonam’s brother Govind, who initially promised support to Raja’s family but is now reportedly in touch with Sonam in jail.

Legal Proceedings Ahead

The chargesheet marks a critical stage in the case, as the Sohra court will now begin trial proceedings. The prosecution is expected to rely heavily on the SIT’s timeline, electronic evidence, and testimonies to prove the conspiracy.

With the victim’s family demanding the harshest punishment and public sentiment running high, the case is set to be one of the most closely watched trials in 2025.
