Kaleshwaram Controversy Deepens: Kavitha Targets Cousins Amid CBI Probe

Kavitha Accuses Harish Rao and Santosh Rao of Corruption

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha has sparked a major internal storm by directly blaming her cousins — former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao and former MP J. Santosh Rao — for alleged large-scale irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP).
Speaking at a press conference in Hyderabad after returning from a 10-day trip to the United States, Kavitha claimed that her father and BRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) was being made a scapegoat while others “amassed huge assets” from the project.

She accused the two leaders of playing a pivotal role in the project’s execution, saying:

“They accumulated huge assets blinding KCR. They are the anacondas of corruption.”

Strong Objection to CBI Probe into Kaleshwaram

Kavitha condemned Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s decision to hand over the Kaleshwaram case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), calling it an insult to KCR, the architect of Telangana’s statehood. She lamented:

“When a great leader like KCR is forced to face a CBI inquiry, does it even matter whether the BRS survives or not? From now on, will everyone call KCR a CBI case?”

The MLC demanded a direct investigation into Harish Rao, Santosh Rao, and contractor Megha Krishna Reddy, alleging their involvement in project mismanagement.

Party Silence and Internal Turmoil

Kavitha criticized BRS leadership for not taking a strong stand against the inquiry, questioning why the party did not call for a Telangana bandh. She also accused detractors of spreading false propaganda about her on social media.
Her comments point to deep divisions within the BRS leadership as the party faces mounting legal and political challenges.

Kavitha Elected HMS Honorary President

In a significant development, Kavitha was unanimously elected honorary president of the Hindustan Mazdoor Sangh (HMS) during its general body meeting in Srirampur, Mancherial district. The election makes her the second BRS leader to hold the post after former Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy.
This comes just days after she was removed from the Telangana Boggu Ghani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS) and replaced by former Minister Koppula Eashwar, signaling political shifts within labor unions traditionally aligned with the BRS.

KCR and Harish Rao File Interim Petition in HC

Former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and ex-Irrigation Minister Harish Rao filed an interim petition in the Telangana High Court seeking protection from coercive action after the case was handed over to the CBI.
Senior advocate Aryama Sundaram, representing KCR and Harish Rao, argued that the government went back on its earlier assurance that action would only follow an Assembly discussion. However, the bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin refused to grant interim protection, asking the Advocate General to get instructions from the government.

BRS Protest Against Ghose Commission Report

The BRS has called the Justice P.C. Ghose Commission’s report on Kaleshwaram “trash,” alleging it is part of a political conspiracy to shut down the project, which it calls Telangana’s lifeline. Following an intense Assembly debate, BRS MLAs staged a walkout and symbolically threw the Ghose Commission report into a dustbin at the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial.
BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) announced statewide protests, including dharnas, road blockades, and bike rallies, over the next two days.

Political Blame Game Intensifies

  • Congress’ Stand: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud defended the CBI probe, citing interstate ramifications and involvement of central undertakings. He argued that only a CBI investigation would ensure transparency and counter allegations of political bias.

  • BJP’s Reaction: Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the CBI probe validated BJP’s long-standing stance that the project was a “BRS ATM.”

  • BRS’ Counter: KTR accused both Congress and BJP of conspiring against KCR, stating:

“Revanth Reddy, who until yesterday opposed the CBI, suddenly changed his stance overnight.”

Kaleshwaram Project: A Political and Legal Flashpoint

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, built on the Godavari River, has become the epicenter of political conflict in Telangana. Once touted as a landmark infrastructure project for irrigation and water supply, it now faces allegations of financial mismanagement, corruption, and environmental damage.
The current investigation, legal petitions, and escalating rhetoric underscore its role as a high-stakes political battleground between Congress, BRS, and BJP.

Conclusion: Telangana Politics at a Crossroads

The ongoing legal tussle, leadership tensions within BRS, and the CBI probe into Kaleshwaram mark a turning point in Telangana’s political narrative. With Kavitha openly criticizing her own cousins and party leadership, the controversy has deepened fissures within the BRS.
The coming months will determine whether the CBI investigation reshapes the political landscape or further polarizes Telangana’s power blocs.
