US and Japan Strengthen Security Pact from Over 60 Years Ago




Amidst growing security concerns posed by China and North Korea, the United States and Japan are planning to enhance their security pact, originally inked over six decades ago. According to diplomatic sources cited by Kyodo news agency, the US military aims to reinforce the functions of its command headquarters in Japan to facilitate smoother cooperation with Japan's self-defence forces.


Bolstering Response Capabilities


Japan and the United States are also collaborating on further measures to strengthen their response capabilities. Japan had previously decided to acquire the capability to strike enemy bases, a significant move under its war-renouncing Constitution. Additionally, Japan plans to establish a joint headquarters to command its ground, maritime, and air forces by March 2025, aiming to deepen cooperation with the US military.


Addressing Security Threats


The decision to strengthen the security pact comes in response to perceived security threats from North Korea and China. Recent missile tests by North Korea and increased military activities by China in the South China Sea and near Taiwan have raised concerns in both countries.


Upcoming Talks and Summit


Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to visit the United States next month for talks with President Joe Biden. The leaders are expected to review their command and control operations, with discussions on enhancing security cooperation. The upcoming summit between Biden and Kishida will likely pave the way for further cooperation between the two nations.


Historical Context and Defence Cooperation


The US and Japan have been allies since World War II and signed a defence treaty in 1960. This treaty allows the US to establish bases in Japan in exchange for a commitment to defend Japan in case of an attack. The two countries have collaborated closely on various defence initiatives, including the development of ballistic missile technology.


Future Outlook


Efforts to strengthen the security pact underscore the shared commitment of the US and Japan to address evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The potential announcement of enhanced defence capabilities after the Biden-Kishida summit signals a proactive approach to bolstering regional security.
