India Stands Firm in Supporting UN Resolution Backing Palestinian Bid for Full Membership



In a significant diplomatic move, India has thrown its weight behind a United Nations resolution supporting the full membership of Palestine, underscoring its longstanding commitment to a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine conflict. 


The Resolution's Passage

The resolution, which garnered overwhelming support in the UN General Assembly, calls upon the Security Council to give "favorable consideration" to Palestine's bid for full membership. According to reports, the resolution secured a resounding majority of 143 votes in favor, with India among the nations backing the text.


India's Diplomatic Stance

 India's stance on the Israel-Palestine issue has consistently emphasized the need for a negotiated two-state solution. While condemning acts of terrorism, including recent attacks by Hamas, India has reiterated its support for the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, within secure and recognized borders.


Reaffirming Commitment 

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated this position in February, reaffirming India's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. India's support for the UN resolution reaffirms its principled stand and aligns with its broader foreign policy objectives of promoting peace, stability, and justice in the region.


Palestinian Ambassador's Remarks 

In his remarks before the vote, the Palestinian ambassador highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where millions of Palestinians are facing immense hardship amidst ongoing conflicts. He expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by protesters around the world, including on US university campuses, in condemning the violence and advocating for Palestinian rights.


Israel's Response 

However, Israel swiftly condemned the resolution, labeling it as "absurd" and accusing the UN of bias. The Israeli foreign minister criticized the decision, arguing that it rewarded the actions of Hamas and undermined efforts for peace in the region.


Implications of the Resolution

Despite the General Assembly vote's symbolic significance, it is important to note that it does not confer UN membership to Palestine. However, it does grant the Palestinian Authority new procedural rights and privileges within the UN system.


Next Steps

 Following the passage of the resolution, the Palestinian Authority announced its intention to seek full membership from the UN Security Council. However, the United States has signaled its intention to veto any such request, reiterating its stance that the most viable path to statehood for the Palestinians is through direct negotiations with Israel.
